“Luxury is a necessity that begins where necessity ends” – Coco Chanel
The eternal question, why do we love watches? Are we lucky to have them? Or are we cursed for being obsessed? I consider myself both. Appreciating mechanical artifacts is not for everyone, and that is ok. The cost of owning such items is not cheap, in a lot of instances. They are not a necessity, but we need them. Thank you Coco Chanel. Sometimes the obsession of “having” the latest and greatest, can get the better of us. It can lead us to debt, then the hobby is not enjoyable anymore.
In our current times, where technology dominates, we carry a computer in our pocket. Countless amounts of (accurate and inaccurate) information within our reach, one of them being the “time”. Everyone is looking at their phones, nobody needs a watch, right? But we still need them. Is it a status symbol? Not for me. I like them for what they are, but I also need to be intrigued by them. If I don’t understand the quirkiness of one, the challenge of creating it, or I am not intrigued by the “need” that it fulfilled, my interest fades.
A watch is a romantic object. It becomes a part of you. As wrong as it sounds, it defines you. The way I think of it, it does not define your personality or your worth. But it defines the way people might remember you. The way I remember my grandparents, always wearing a watch. Watches are just things, they can come and go. But I definitely like having something that reminds me of my grandfather.
Why do you like watches? Thanks again for stopping by.
