On August 11th 2021, during Car Week, I had the opportunity to join the “Walk The Track with Porsche factory driver Patrick Long”. An event put together by Hagerty. It was basically a 2.238 mile autocross-like walk. I am not sure if this has been set up before by Hagerty, but it is the very first time I have received an invitation like this.
Three factors were the key decision makers for me to join this event. One, when I read the email for the event, the statement from Brian Ghidinelli, who sent the email: “In my ~ 18 years of driving at Laguna Seca, I have been able to walk the track just once. This is a rare opportunity!”. My thought was that just walking the track is an amazing, and rare, opportunity. Just THAT was appealing to me already. You can learn a lot from a course walk alone. Now having a pro explain his take on each turn to us (factor number 2), made it easier for me to say “I do”.
A chance to get up close with the track, and being able to hear how one of the pros approaches each turn, and situation, on the track, was a very fun and insightful experience. We were able to get to see the level changes of the track, where the markers are and what Patrick looks at, as a reference point, when driving this specific track. These things you get to see when you drive the track, but to take your time and discuss about it, makes it even more special.
Finally, deciding factor number three, was the great views and pictures I was able to get. During the event, despite all the people, I was able to get some great views of the track. After the event, wandering around the paddock, I was able to see some of the cars that would be racing during the weekend. I can’t recommend this event strong enough, if you are a track addict and want to learn more of one of this specific track. Or, if you just want to witness one of the most iconic tracks in motorsports. If you ever get the chance to do this, don’t think twice, just make sure to pack your sunscreen and sunglasses.
Let me leave you with some of the shots I took from the track and the paddock.
